Camel Rides

Our main reason for driving this far was to go on a camel ride. The French couple set it up to take a two hour sunset camel ride on Dec 31. I wasn't sure how I would be able to drive to the camels (especially having to cross a river the night before) so he suggested we hire a 4x4 with a guide. This turned out to be a great idea. Hassan picked us up in the morning and drove us to several geological sites (we saw marble - with fossils in it, Quartz and desert roses). Then Hassan took us to a berber village and we had tea. What a great experience. Then he drove us to a few Oasis. Unfortunately the weather was not cooperating - it had been cloudy for more than a day and it was about this time it started to rain. We went to a touristy place at the base of the dunes and had lunch. After lunch, we were hurried towards the camels. It was still sprinkling so we all put on our rain jackets and they put us on camels. We left in a group of seven (one of the guys was in a wheel chair and they just lifted him on the camel). So we started going up the dune ... and it started to rain even harder. Marc thought to himself, "How many people can say they rode a camel in the desert and it was cold and rainy?". One thing that we all agreed was that it was very uncomfortable and we were all happy when our guides turned us around only 35 minutes into the trip. We definitely weren't going to see a sunset that evening.
