We spent New Years at the Auberge. The French couple had a fancy dinner for us and later had live African drum music for us. The Spaniards there were very prepared with champagne glasses and party hats but they celebrated a little early. In fact, it wasn't until midnight that we realized they celebrated an hour earlier since Spain is one hour ahead.
On Jan 1 we drove north to Meknes. It was a beautiful drive. The scenery kept changing from the desert to mountains (similar to Wyoming) to snow (we saw people skiing at one point) to Vineyards. Most of the wine produced in Morocco is from the Meknes area. We were planning on going to Fes but we had trouble finding a place to stay on such short notice. Meknes was probably the better choice for Priscilla and Dick. It isn't as busy and they have a nice open square for people watching.
We arrived at Ryad Habia and stayed in some very nice suites. We had the whole floor to ourselves. The next day we went off exploring the medina. Dick and Priscilla found themselves buying a rug (as every tourist in Morocco must do!). Stephanie and Marc went out to get lost in the Medina. We met back in the Ryad to relax. It turned out due to miscommunication (by Marc) that we only had the room for 1 night instead of 2. They arranged for us to stay at Riad Meknes (the first Riad in Meknes for tourists). Though it was a pain to move it was nice to see two different Riads in the same town. We visited the Mausoleum and had tea in the main Plaza while watching the rain. We later went to Nouvelle Ville and ate at a French restaurant.
